REFLECTION-METAMORPHOSIS(LIFECYCLE OF A BUTTERFLY)
Metamorphosis-"Lifecycle of a Butterfly" was extracted from the Primary School "Science" curriculum under the guidelines from Standard Three. When the group and myself decided to teach this lesson I became ecstatic and intrigued with the idea of teaching the content to the class.
The lifecycle of the butterfly was divided into four sections:
Butterfly
Egg
Caterpillar
Pupa
WHAT WENT WELL IN THIS LESSON?
PLANNING:
Whilst planning the lesson:
We expected the students to adapt and build stimuli based on previous knowledge they had on family and their young in "Agricultural-Science" and based on the answers given, they did build on previous knowledge.
We also aimed at obtaining resources and integrating technology that were be colourful yet interesting and this objective was achieved.
We catered for a student with "low-vision" and she was able to use her strength of touch/feel to follow along with the listen. We catered by including "videos which included audio" along with manipulative for her to feel the animals along with the stages for her to place them in order. This was executed quite well and she was part of an inclusive classroom. Based on the student's reactions, they loved the resources that were given to them and they participated willingly. We worked as a group to plan the lesson and the structure and consistency was well-organized and fortunately it was effective and it was presented smoothly.
WHAT DID YOU ENJOY?
PLANNING:
I enjoyed the entire planning process for this lesson. I really liked the viewing of the videos and researching the activities to integrate into the lesson. Whilst planning the lesson, we had to mentally derive to ideas to make our classroom engaging and fun and this was very intriguing. I loved viewing the videos and releasing how technology can become a new aspect of education.
AFTER TEACHING:
Metamorphosis(Lifecycle of a Butterfly) was a very interesting yet exciting topic to teach. I loved the students reactions in relation to the group activity that they had to engage in. I enjoyed the fact that they followed the classroom rules and also they felt comfortable to ask questions about the topic and how its important to us.
IF YOU WERE TO TEACH THIS LESSON, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DIFFERENTLY?
PLANNING:
In relation, to the planning process we could of added more content to the teaching points. I would of also included a song to include one more different learning style to the lesson.
REFLECTION:
Whilst teaching the lesson, I would of elaborate on the content of the stages a little more. There were four stages in the lifecycle of a butterfly and I believe that each stage needed a more precise definition. I would of also change my set induction for the lesson Our set induction was effective, however I would of like for them to discover the topic. I would also change the video to a fully animated version since some of the students did not respond well to the video shown.
WHAT WOULD YOU ADD?
I would of added recourses to the set induction for the student's to discover what the lesson for that class was about. I would of also included a chart with the four stages to the front of the class that included an arrow to transition to the stages. I would of also added in a "classroom-rules" chart to the front of the class. In the class we did have classroom rules, however it was printed and it was stuck to each desk, however including it at the front would of been a little more effective. The class did become unruly at times especially in relation with the group work and I would include effective management strategies to help curb the noise amongst themselves.
WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE LEFT OUT?
Our lesson was very well-organized and interesting however there is one resource I would of changed in relation to the lesson. I would of left out the pictures for the activity and instead allowed them to make the stages(insects and pupa.)
All the group members worked co-operatively to the plan the lesson. It was well-organized, interesting and it intrigued our student's attention. The manipulative, video, chart and song grasped out students academic interest and the content was suitable for their age group.

OBJECTIVE: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to
Define “Metamorphosis” using a Word-Processing Document with overall average performance.
The teacher would help the students rearrange the classroom.
Once the students are comfortable in their seating arrangements, the lesson would take immediate effect.
The teacher would of previously asked the students to bring two pictures (baby picture and recent.) Based on the student’s response, the teacher would introduce “Metamorphosis” using a “Power-point (Presentation-Software).”
The teacher would integrate the students Social-Studies lesson entitled “The family” with Metamorphosis since it’s based on reproduction. Marzano (2007) focuses on small group work to process new information.
The assessment would integrate “Metamorphosis”, the importance and how it can impact our lives.
Therefore, the students would be put in groups of three to complete a TRUE/FALSE question sheet with ten questions.
They would have to answer/type the correct answer onto the word-processing document.
ONCE THE SET INDUCTION OCCURS THE POWERPOINT CAN BE VIEWED AND BE USED FROM HERE: ).”

LESSON TWO:
OUTCOME: CYCLES AND LIFE-CYCLE OF A BUTTERFLY
OBJECTIVE: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Appreciate the “Lifecycle of a Butterfly” by arranging still pictures with 100% accuracy.
After, the introduction of “Metamorphosis” in the previous lesson, she will review the lesson for one minute this week.
The teacher would then explain to the students that there are six important insects that are involved with “Metamorphosis, “however they will be focusing on the “Life-cycle of the Butterfly” since they live in the countryside and they are seeing a lot of these insects around.
The teacher would play a butterfly song while being dressed as a Butterfly. Using another power-point the teacher would explain the stages with still-pictures
(1.) Butterfly
(2.) Egg
(3.)Caterpillar
(4.) Chryslis
After the integration of the power-point with the still-pictures, the teacher would assess the students.
They would be presented with a graphic organizer to put the stages in order.
They work in peers to encourage co-operation.
When they have finished with the computers, they would have to the front of the class and put themselves in the order of the stages.
THE POWERPOINT ALONG WITH THE STILL PICTURES CAN BE FOUND HERE:

LESSON THREE:
OUTCOME: EXPERIMENTATION
OBJECTIVE: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Demonstrate on how to build a model of the lifecycle of butterfly by being in peers and video-taping the process with 100% overall process.-

The teacher would recap “Metamorphosis” and the “Lifecycle of the Butterfly”.
They would be shown a 2 minute video on how to make the model of a “Lifecycle of a Butterfly.”
The students would work in peers. They would have to follow guidelines for tutorial that would be made by the teacher for the students to follow. This would incorporate John Dewey’s “Hands on Learning” since they would be doing activities with their hands.
THE TUTORIAL CAN BE FOUND HERE:https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bw5Ul9-d732WQk9KdUpoMERmY00/view?usp=sharing
ASSESSMENT: The students would be put into peers to build and record the model of the Lifecycle of a Butterfly over two days.
HOWEVER BEFORE YOU CAN TEACH THIS LESSON YOU HAVE TO PREPARE YOUR INSTRUCTIONAL ENVIRNOMENT
The students would be in a classroom that is both a classroom and a computer lab that is equipped with all instructional equipment.
The students would re-arrange the classroom desks in a semi-circle, so that all students would be able to participate and view the PowerPoint being presented to them
The classroom is very spacious and it has work stations along with each desk.
The classroom has a projector and a white screen, so the environment would be very effective to integrate technology.
At the back of the classroom there are computers so it would be very easy for the students to move from one station to another to complete the tasks on the computer.
At the end of the lesson, they would be asked to follow a tutorial to make a model of a butterfly, so therefore they would have enough space to watch and complete the model with the resources given to them.
It would also be enough space for the student (physical disabilities) on the disabilities.
